Adjacent Utopias

I’m a multidisciplinary designer focused on creating experiences that reorient. Figuring out how branding, interface, strategy, and collaboration can make better products, and a better world is an obsession of mine. As a designer, I strive to craft thoughtful outcomes. As a creative coder and a maker, I'm passionate about prototyping the future.

Bitclaims

The founders of BitClaims wanted to do something big: use blockchain technology to build price transparency within the primary care market. The team had a great idea, but no product. I was one of two designers asked to make this a reality. During my time at Bitclaims, I was responsible for initial product research, interaction, strategy, design, development, and hand-off. I created user experience documents, mock ups, high fidelity wireframes and illustrations. Furthermore, I was responsible for web design, as well as the development of additional marketing materials, including stationary and posters.

1 new identity

I was hired to create an ultra-modern, upscale skincare brand called Hälsa. The client wanted something contemporary that remained in touch with its Scandinavian roots. Taking inspiration from the landscapes of Sweden, the organic palette contrasts the minimal, geometric logo. I was responsible for custom logo type and the creation of brand guidelines.

Responding to my experiences on peer to peer networks, I created a decentralized publication called Second International. Distributed throughout Baltimore, the viewer is forced to navigate the city streets in order to read the magazine. The writing is collected from a variety of open source projects, discussing community dynamics on distributed networks. This project was featured by Peer—To, an online gallery served via the dat protocol.

Epiphyte is a prototype for a new kind of economy, that uses living sensors to account for the externalities of industry. Employing lichen and moss to develop air quality metrics, epiphyte makes trades on the stock market that correspond to environmental health. Epiphyte is the culmination of a year long humanistic studies research project, combined with a six month design capstone. Project deliverables include the prototyped body of the tradebot, a code repository, an explanatory video, a website, and a 40 page research paper. This spring, I was invited to present this research at RadicalxChange, in Detroit.

3 rounds of testing

Arthur was a digital coaching prototype, designed to help phone users learn healthy screen habits. Using sentiment analysis, Arthur sought to promote goal oriented behavioral change, as defined by the user. Focusing largely on user testing and design best practices, my responsibilities on this project included conducting user interviews, prototyping, wire framing and more.

Botnet

The botnet can’t be seen. Its success depends upon invisibility: this illusion of autonomy is necessary for achieving supremacy within a network. This project explores ways of visualizing the infrastructure of the botnet. From a branding system, to generative posters, the project culminated in a performance orienting the viewer within a mountain of tweets.

4 prototypes

Responding to the recent UN climate report giving us 12 years to develop systems of resiliency in the face of catastrophic climate change, I prototyped ways of accounting for the remaining time. These experiments focus on rapid iteration within a variety of mediums, resulting in the creations of a chrome extension, a tabletop clock, a ceremonial candle and website.
